  • Low GI & Low Glucose – reduce insulin response in the body and improve the blood cholesterol level
  • High in Anti-Oxidants – to combat free radicals from the environment which cause diseases and aging problems

The higher the Total activity (TA), the more active is the antimicrobial strength.

Organic Honey

Fewster’s Farm

Brothers John and Robert Fewster came from England to Western Australia in 1892 to work in the gold mining industry. In 1898 they founded Fewster’s Farm in Muchea. Soon after John’s wife and three children joined him. Robert started a market garden from the farm.

The brothers first started beekeeping in 1916. Robert Fewster, a civil engineer, left several hives he had been given on the farm before going to South Australia to oversee the construction of drains and irrigation lines.

Beekeeping soon became a good source of income for 4 of the 6 Fewster sons- Nelson, Vince, Norman and Jim, (Kim Fewster’s grandfather). The beekeeping process then was similar to what it is now. Honey was collected from the ancient forests and bush land close to the farm. Then as transport became more modern, the Fewster’s would venture to Pemberton, for the much prized Karri honey and even as far as the gold fields.

Today the tradition lives on with Kim Fewster, a fourth generation beekeeper. Kim’s drive is continuing the tradition of gathering and providing premium quality Western Australian honey along with a focus on maintaining the old and natural ways of collecting, extracting and bottling honey with a fully accredited organic honey range.

“We hope you enjoy our honey, as pure and natural as the WA environment & bees”

Manuka Honey VS Jarrah Honey – The Benefits of Medicinal Honey

Improve your health in the most delicious way possible! There are many benefits of Jarrah honey which are comparable to products such as Active Manuka, Manuka Honey USA and Medi Honey – all often used to treat diabetes, acne and other diseases.

Jarrah honey has 50% higher microbial activity when compared with other types of medicinal honey. Jarrah honey has a low glucose, high fructose content and has been found to contain elevated levels of Butyric Acid, along with pre-biotics and pro-biotics.

This may make Jarrah honey a good natural compliment to other treatments for ailments like stomach issues, acne, diabetes, bad breath.

*Please consult your healthcare professional before using any honey for medicinal purposes.

Pure Jarrah honey is less likely to crystallise than most other honeys. It has a wonderful caramel like flavor and a beautiful dark golden color.

Low Glucose and High Fructose Jarrah Honey

Fructose is absorbed more slowly and evenly than glucose, which means that it is perfect for endurance training and athletics. There is even evidence by the creators of the Hibernation Diet – Mike and Stuart McInnes – that foods with a high fructose content, such as a medicinal bioactive honey like Jarrah honey, help to burn fat while you sleep, and increase stamina as a result. This may also aid diseases such as diabetes. High fructose gives jarrah honey a lower Glycaemic Index (GI) than most other honeys. Jarrah honey has approximately 52% fructose, 22% glucose and 0.3% sucrose.

Jarrah honey has a low percentage of glucose.

Low glycaemic foods are known to reduce insulin response in the body and to improve blood cholesterol levels, which is particularly important as you age.

The high fructose, low glucose levels in Jarrah Honey results in a honey that is less likely to crystallize.

High in Medicinal and Bioactive Anti-Oxidants

Anti-oxidant capacity in honey is often indicated by the color of the honey – the darker the honey the more anti-oxidant properties it is likely to have.

Due to its high antioxidant levels, Jarrah honey may support active skin cell renewal and stimulate collagen and elastin production, along with fighting acne.

According to the National Cancer Institute of Australia, foods with high antioxidant levels fight free radicals that attack healthy cells.

Stomach Health

Jarrah honey has been found to be very good for stomach health.

Jarrah honey has been found to have an elevated content of Butyric acid and high amounts of pre-biotics and pro-biotics. Butyric acid is a substance that may lower the risk of colon cancer.

Jarrah honey may also help to heal stomach ulcers caused by helicobacter pylori.*

Hydrogen peroxide as an active compound

Jarrah honey’s high activity is produced by hydrogen peroxide forming enzymes added to the honey by the bees. The hydrogen peroxide in honey is at a very low concentration and is like a ‘slow release’ antiseptic.

Disease Free

Only Western Australia protects its state forests and vigorously enforces strict quarantine controls for apiary products that are brought from overseas or interstate. This is the primary reason why WA is the only place in the world that is free from pests and diseases. No insecticides or pesticides are used on the hives.

If you’re looking for a natural way to compliment your treatment of many health conditions why not give Jarrah honey a try.

Jarrah honey’s anti-microbial quality is measured by the term “Total Activity (TA)”. The TA is like a bacteria killing scale; the higher the TA the greater the antimicrobial strength. The anti-bacterial activity of honey is derived via natural enzymes and chemicals in the honey. A description of the method used to determine the Activity of honey is included in this paper by Rob Manning. Any honey with a TA of greater than 10+ may have beneficial antimicrobial properties, and these properties are more effective as the TA level increases. Note that the UMF value on Manuka honey is essentially the same as a TA value, but the antimicrobial activity is generated by different chemical processes.

Total Activity is the combination of Peroxide Activity (PA) and Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA). In Jarrah honey, nearly all of the Activity is PA, and results from a reaction between an enzyme placed in the honey by the bees called Glucose Oxidase and glucose. This reaction, which starts when the honey is diluted, results in the gradual production of a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide is a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent when operating in conjunction with honey’s other antiseptic properties, but is gentle on human tissue and the digestive system.

NPA results from any other chemicals in the honey that have an antibacterial effect. In Manuka honey, in which nearly all TA is NPA, the active chemical is Methylglyoxal (abbreviated to MGO). The MGO forms over time in the honey from the interaction of a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which originates from the nectar of the Manuka flower, and other naturally-occurring proteins and amino acids in the honey. MGO is cytotoxic (toxic to cells).

Manuka producers have adopted two methods to describe the activity of Manuka honey that have vastly different values for the same honey. The UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) is a trademarked term to describe the NPA, and typically ranges from 5+ to 20+. More recently, an MGO value, which is the assayed methylgloxal content in mg/kg, is being used by some producers. MGO values range from about 100 to 1,000. The table below shows approximate equivalent values.

*Please note that UMF in Manuka measures non peroxide activity- it has very little peroxide activity. TA measures measures total activity

All Fewster’s Farm Jarrah honey is tested for TA in the Eurofins laboratory located in Waikato University, New Zealand.
